Public Art Commission: Glass Artwork for Penarth Library’s 120th Anniversary

I was invited to collaborate on a special project for Penarth Library and designing glasswork to celebrate its 120th anniversary. As part of the process, I researched, developed, and presented several design concepts. The local community chosen a simple yet meaningful design — one that reflects the key elements of the sun and the sea speaking deeply to both the place and its people.
Coming from my hometown of Klaipėda, Lithuania — also a coastal city — and now living by the sea in Penarth, I feel a strong personal connection to both places. The final piece captures this connection: the ever-changing sea, the beauty of Penarth’s sunrises, a ship symbolising life’s journey, and seabirds as quiet symbols of hope and positivity.
The glasswork was beautifully crafted by Dave and installed his team from local glass manufacturer Ashdown (Sales) LTD, who also suggested using soft pastel colours to enhance the feeling of lightness and calm.
Since the glasswork is installed indoors, the shifting daylight creates changing reflections throughout the day — bringing the outdoors in and casting subtle sunlit moods across the space. This natural play of light gives the artwork a gentle, abstract quality, much like the way sunlight shimmer across the sea.
It’s been a true joy to create something so rooted in place, and I’ve loved documenting the journey from the first sketch to the final installation. I hope this piece brings joy and inspiration to all future visitors of the library.

Gwahoddwyd fi i gydweithio ar brosiect arbennig ar gyfer Llyfrgell Penarth i ddylunio gwaith gwydr i ddathlu 120 mlynedd ers ei sefydlu. Fel rhan o’r broses, fe fuais i’n ymchwilio, yn datblygu ac yn cyflwyno nifer o gysyniadau dylunio. Dewisodd y gymuned leol ddyluniad syml ond ystyrlon — un sy’n adlewyrchu’r haul a’r môr fel elfennau allweddol ac sy’n cydseinio’n gryf gyda’r dref a’i phobl.
Fel un a fagwyd yn Klaipėda, Lithwania — sydd hefyd ar yr arfordir — ac sydd nawr yn byw wrth y môr ym Mhenarth, rwy’n teimlo cysylltiad personol cryf â’r ddau le. Mae’r darn olaf yn cynrychioli’r cysylltiad hwn: y môr sydd byth yr un fath, harddwch y wawr dros Benarth, llong sy’n symboleiddio taith bywyd, ac adar môr fel symbolau tawel o obaith a meddylfryd positif.
Cafodd y gwaith gwydr ei saernïo’n gelfydd gan Dave a’i osod gan ei dîm o’r gwneuthurwr gwydr lleol, Ashdown (Sales) LTD, a awgrymodd hefyd ddefnyddio lliwiau pastel meddal i danlinellu’r teimlad o ysgafnder a llonyddwch.
Gan fod y gwaith gwydr wedi’i osod dan do, mae’r golau dydd sy’n symud ar hyd y diwrnod yn creu adlewyrchiadau newydd o hyd — a hynny’n gwahodd y byd tu allan i mewn ac yn ysgeintio’r ystafell â llecynnau heulog fel chwa o awyr iach. Mae’r chwarae naturiol hwn gyda golau yn rhoi gwedd dyner a haniaethol i’r gwaith celf, yn debyg iawn i olau’r haul yn disgleirio ar y môr. Mae wedi bod yn hyfryd creu rhywbeth sydd wedi’i wreiddio mor bendant yn ei le, ac rydw i wedi bod wrth fy modd yn dogfennu’r daith, o’r braslun cyntaf i’r gosodiad terfynol. Gobeithio y bydd y darn hwn yn dod â llawenydd ac ysbrydoliaeth i holl ymwelwyr y llyfrgell yn y dyfodol.
